Alltel and SPAM

Alltel HTC Touch Diamond

Alltel HTC Touch Diamond

I had a customer come in last week to setup his Alltel HTC Diamond (looks like an iPhone wannabe). We host his POP, but not SMTP (we don’t do SMTP unless we have to, and we charge for it) . I had never setup an Alltel phone, and given that they are bound to become Verizon, I assumed that tech support would know the new SMTP address. Never assume…

Calling support… we found that Alltel techs (are morons, and) don’t know their own smtp addresses. So I enabled SMTP for his account wit us, and started to set it up. However, when I try to send… I get an error from our server: rejected, IP blacklisted by spamhaus (and not the dialup kind either).

So, apparently, telling them that you cant use SMTP from your host because it costs you more isn’t a good excuse… they kept telling me we would have to use our SMPT, and didn’t know what theirs was (she wasn’t too nice about it and tried to play stupid, Thanks Melissa).

Until the second call, when I told them we couldn’t use our SMTP because their IP was blacklisted for spam… then they remembered what it was: mail.alltel.net (not .com, and doesn’t require auth)

So, FYI… Alltel phones send lots of spam (according to spamhaus). The Alltel tech didnt even ask another question after I said that.
